But my daughter begged for them, so I yielded and gave it a go. To my surprise, they were super crunchy, a sign of success! They were not, as I had feared, soft or oily. It just goes to show that you can never know if you don't try. Try to place adverbial phrases ("for the first time", "to my surprise", "at first") closer to the verbs they modify. "Begging" is normally not a pleasant word. However, in this context it is sweet.
