There really isn’t a difference these days, it is mainly just the name of a roadway I.e street (st), avenue (ave), boulevard (blvd), drive (dr), circle (cir). These used to do with the size, direction, etc. of a road. For instance circle might be a street that ends. Boulevard might be a wider street meant for more traffic or run perpendicular to an street. Drive might be a smaller street. These days, they are used interchangeably and mainly just are part of the particular street’s name to identify it. If talking about a roadway, you are safest identifying it as a road. I.e. down the road. If you’re talking about houses or a small area, you could say down the street I.e. that house is down the street.
