To make fdmaxey's mortar, you need sand, cement and water. Usually about 3 parts sand to 1 part cement, with water added until you get the mix right for trowelling. So you might find a few other things useful: bucket, shovel, cement mixer.

The material is called mortar. Mostly what you would need (besides the obvious bricks and mortar) are a trowel, a mortar towel and a scraper.
