"as well as you" are intervening words and so if you get rid of those words, you still come up with the original sentence " I am a lawyer."

The words inside the two commas are just giving extra information; you can just delete them and obtain a right complete sentence anyway: "I (as well as you) am a lawyer" the main sentence is "I am a lawyer" (and not "I is a lawyer") Francesco :)
