Usually, when you use the word "date," it means more like a romantic date. Generally, you would just say that you're going to go out with a friend, we often use the term hang out, etc.

我觉得没问题因为date这个词有不同的意思和不同的用法,但是我觉得最好是用下面的语法结构为了说更清楚你想表达的意思。 I have a date with (who) (when). For example: I have a date with a hot girl tonight. Or, I have a dinner date with some of my friends tomorrow night. If you only say 'I have a date' it is ambiguous (可能会引起歧义的意思,别人会认为是浪漫的)。

My advice to avoid confusion, you should just say specifically what your intention is. when you want to say "I want to go shopping with friends(boy & girl)" You should just say you want to go shopping with friends. Using the word date can mislead someone to speculate an event of romance. You can also use the phrase "let's hang out" as this is a more common term among friends. The common mistake people make is they do not define the relationship/association clearly and directly. You can't be sure how others will interpret your meaning.. you might receive an unwanted kiss while on your date, hahaha - Good luck. See you on skype ^_^
