My advice to avoid confusion, you should just say specifically what your intention is. when you want to say "I want to go shopping with friends(boy & girl)" You should just say you want to go shopping with friends. Using the word date can mislead someone to speculate an event of romance. You can also use the phrase "let's hang out" as this is a more common term among friends. The common mistake people make is they do not define the relationship/association clearly and directly.
