"Star-crossed" or "star-crossed lovers" are phrases used to describe a couple who have an ill fated relationship. Which may or may not be thwarted by outside forces.
The origins of the phrase lies in astrology with the early belief that people's fates were written in the stars.
It was famously coined in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

Thought to be first used in Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" star crossed refers to the fate of the lovers. With the notion back then of fate being something handed to you by them heavens, star crossed refers to lovers fated for their love to be doomed. Basically when a lovers' love is "set in the stars" to be thwarted.
