question about a sentence I promptly put the giant jet on automatic pilot and hoped to hell the gadget worked, because I couldn’t fly a kite. what does "hoped to hell" mean?

'hoped to hell' means he is wishing very hard

hope to hell - more common would be the phrase 'hoped like hell' but both surely mean 'fervently hope'

I never saw phrase like that, but I think it means to hope intensively
