What are some good Mandarin textbooks? I would like to find something like a series of textbooks which start from the very beginning and end up at an advanced level. I am looking for something popular and effective which many people have already used successfully.

You can try "new practical chinese reader" series or "graded chinese reader" series. Both are widely used and they are written in English and Chinese language. They also contain a cd for listening exercise.
