How would you explain ‘Christ of the Venom’ in the context?
Inside the cathedral you have to pass the great Altar of Perdón, all golden with angels flying about. The black Christ of the Venom hangs there dead in his black skirt, surrounded by little balconies, maybe for the angels to land on when they get tired. It was such a monument of accusation, even Mother had to bow her head a little as she crept past it, sins dripping from her shoes as we walked around the nave, leaving invisible puddles on the clean tiles. Perhaps God said her name was mud. He would have to yell that more than three times, for her to hear.
How would you explain ‘Christ of the Venom’ in the second sentence?
Thanks!
PS: it is La Catedral de Mexico

Looks like this statue exists in Meixco but is usually called the Lord of Poison (not Christ of Venom). Literally a black coloured Christ.
The story attached to it is here: http://www.mysteriousbritain.co.uk/legends/our-lord-of-the-poison%E2%80%8F.html (let me know if you cant access that, its too long to post here)

Just another link, but my answer is the same as Amanda's: it's a physically black statue of Christ, with a story of absorbing poison or venom.

Venom is the generic name of poisons produced by some animals, like snakes. So yes, Christ of the poison.
