In Spain we say - beca. but i´ve noticed you have different words for this. which to choose and why?

I am referring , mainly to those given by the government to students when they pass most of their subjects.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that a scholarship is given based on your academic achievements, whereas a grant is given based on financial need.
