It is good idea to study both alphabets since, as it is already said, in use. Latin alphabet is more and more present, but you will be faced with many Cyrillic words (shops, institutions...). Also, the literature that I use for teaching Serbian as foreign language contains our official alphabet. So, it will be easier to start with Latin alphabet and then, slowly, try to use Cyrillic.

The both are in use in Serbia. But as they prefer Cyrillic alphabet, as the national alphabet, it could be good to learn it too. K.

You should know both. It's true that now we use both letters, but our first and traditional letter is Cyrillic. We invented Latin so the foreign people is going to be able to understand us better. I know that Croatian guys do not use the Cyrillic, because they simple through it out, but we kept it.

I am afraid you'd have to learn both!!! After all, Serbs do use both of them and at school, children learn them both. Actually, knowing both of them would make you feel more comfortable if/when in Serbia. Otherwise, you will feel that although you speak the language, quite often you cannot read the signs or the menu and that could end up being distressing.

Hello :) I would definitely recommend learning both scripts. Please take a look at my blog entry that discuss the writing systems used in Serbia. I am sure you will find interesting details. :) http://speakupserbian.blogspot.com/2014/09/from-two-old-slavic-to-two-modern.html
