If there is a real object to the verb, then you have to use GLI, dative pronoun:
Gli ho fatto dire la verità.
Gli abbiamo fatto togliere la maglietta.
If there is no real object to the verb then you have to use LO
Lo abbiamo fatto piangere (L'abbiamo fatto piangere)
Lo hanno fatto entrare
If I am wrong, please, correct me, but I think that in the sentence Gli hanno fatto leggere must be used LO hanno fatto leggere, because it is not said what is being read. Gli hanno fatto leggere una poesia, it seems ok.
