What's the meaning of "Marry off your son when you wish. Marry off your daughter when you can"

Firstly - these days, in a western country, it would almost never be said, as it is an old-fashioned idea.
But - the idea was that daughters were a burden to their parents, so therefore the parents should try to get them married as soon as possible. For sons, it doesn't matter so much.
