How can I say "Keeping up with the Joneses in Korean?" in 반말 (자연스럽게)
Where that's defined as... "Keeping up with the Joneses" is an idiom in many parts of the English-speaking world referring to the comparison to one's neighbor as a benchmark for social class or the accumulation of material goods.
For example, how could I say something like...
Everyone keeps buying a new car. I need to buy one too. Trying to keep up with the Joneses.
Thanks!
"Keeping up with the Joneses"
One would say something like:
다들 하는데 나라고 안 할 수 없지.
다 하는데 우리라고 빠질 수 없어. (빠지다=miss; miss out on)
다들 하니까 우리도 해야지.
(나 if you're single, 우리 for a couple or a family)
So the whole sentence would be:
Everyone keeps buying a new car. I need to buy one too. Trying to keep up with the Joneses.
=> 다들 새 차를 사네. 나도 하나 사야겠다. 나라고 빠질 수 없지.
