You can understand the difference from this fact: In interrogative questions /che/ is an abbreviation of /che cosa/. So usually we use /quale/ when selecting among a group of similar items, and /che/ or /che cosa/, or /cosa/, when the selection is broader. When /che/ is followed by a noun (example: ABC), then /che ABC/ and /quale ABC/ are equivalent, and we prefer /che ABC/ Usually ABC is 'tipo, genere' (kind) Examples: a1) Vorrei una penna. (entering a shop) a2) Che tipo di penna? b1) (showing a box with pens in it) Quale penna le piace? c1) (Entering the kitchen) Che vuoi mangiare? c2) (opening the cupboard) Che tipo di biscotti vuoi? d1) (showing books on a shelf) {Quale, quali} vuoi che ti presto?

Yes it is satisfactory for me. I understand that a more specific thing we can use quale whereas che is used for a less specific thing!
