Chinese people tend to take others' faces into account and at least maintain a seemingly harmonious relationship with others. So most people won't directly show their discrimination or contempt to you unless you annoy someone. However, there is no political correction about racism in China so sometimes people may joke about your skin color or race characteristics. If you are sure they are not meant to humiliate you and just make a joke and haha, don't be too sensitive. Still I want to tell you, some friends of mine who are living in Guangzhou, which is the capital of Guangdong province, complain about black people to me, because there are more and more black people living in Guangzhou. Some of them stole into China and some of their passports have been overdue. And the black people have bothered some of Guangzhou people's life, for examples, public security and employment. So some of my friends in Guangzhou don't like black people, not for the sake of racism, but for the sake of destroyed well-being. This is just like some Hongkong people dislike Mainland people, some European dislike Moslem immigrants. They are not meant to hate anybody or not tolerant, but just want a simple and peaceful life.

Dear Amalia, This is William from China

It depends on the city you stay and people you meet. Most Chinese are friendly toward foreign friends but racism is alive in China, just like any other part of the world. Do remember maybe they are just too shy to answer your question.
