飲みない?Is it a positive question or a negative question?
I was watching a movie the other day in which a character asked someone if they wanted a drink.
She said 飲みない? (With the intonation) which I've always known to be the negative form of the verb, but surely if that were the case, the translation would be like "you don't want to drink?" Instead of "you want a drink?" How comes it translated positively? And if that's correct, how do I ask if someone doesn't want to drink?
TLDR://
Can negative forms of verbs be used to ask if someone wants to do something. If so, how do I ask if someone doesn't want to do something.
Thank you~ ありがとう〜

I think it is 飲まない?. ~しない? means invitation. So 飲まない? means "Let's drink".
I think "you don't want to drink?" is translated as 飲みたくない? and "you want to drink?" is translated as 飲みたい?.

It really depends on the context, and in this case it sounds like a casual conversation between friends asking "won't you drink? / If you don't mind, shall we drink?". I guess it's just a Japanese thing and a more polite way of wording. Another thing to look out for is the intonation - usually for positive cases they would end with an upward inflection.
Hope that helpsssss :)

1.Actually it's not "飲みない?", but "飲まない?".
2. "飲まない?" means "have a drink", if you want to ask someone who doesn't drink, you can say "どうして飲まないの?"
3."飲みませんか。" is a polite way of saying "飲みない?".
Hope it may help you. Have a nice day! Daniel
