Deutsche Alphabet "Sounds"? Hey guys, The other day, I asked a German friend to review the German alphabet with me. I wanted to know the "name" of each letter, and the "sound" each one makes. This is what we are taught in English. For example, for the letter "B" we say the name is (in non-technical terms) "bee" and the sound it makes is "buh". For the letter "J" the name is "jay" and the sound is "juh." All of that's very non-technical (I don't know the official IPA symbols) but you get my point. My request seemed to confuse her. She said that in Germany, they talk about the "name" of letters, but they don't say the "sounds" they make. Now I was the confused one. How do you Germans talk about the sounds German letters make? Originally, I asked her for the "Name" and "klingen" of the letters. I know now that "klingen" is wrong in this context. So my question is, what's the correct way to ask this? How do you talk about the names and sounds of letters?? Thanks everyone!
