wind down/unwind Hi, Could you please tell me whether I can use "wind down" in formal context e.g an academic essay? Because I learned that phrasal verbs are generally 'informal'. Here are some examples taken on the Internet: - This can lead to serious physical and mental health issues, which is why it's extremely important to wind down, both body and mind. - It's proven that the blue light from phones and tablets wakes up the brain making it difficult to wind down and fall asleep. I think 'unwind' is better in such situations. Thank you very much.

It's going to depend on the formality of the paper you are writing and of your professor. In the spoken language, either one is just fine. In a college-level paper, maybe, maybe not. It might be better to use 'relax' or something more along that line, but I also think you can likely get away with including something like that in a paper occasionally. I think my professors would have been fine with it.

Unwind would probably be the better option of the two. Unwind could be used when talking about relaxing or finding peace after something tiring or taxing has happened on the body or mind.

Both phrases are colloquial an non-academic. For a more erudite choice consider "deconstruct stress" or more simply "relax."
