Does 'commit oneself' mean that someone makes a promise or is dedicated to something?
1) The banks have *committed themselves* to boosting profits by slashing costs.
2) The government must *commit itself* to improving healthcare.

Hi David,
You have understood well, to commit is to pledge that something will be taken as one's responsibility. In your examples 1) shows the banks have made a pledge to boost profits and 2) shows the government needs to put more effort to improving healthcare. A commitment can be formal or informal, for example signing a contract is a commitment, but so is telling a friend they can call you any time for help.
