What is the meaning of "concussion"? "The end of the cylinder was being screwed out from within. Nearly two feet of shining screw projected. Somebody blundered against me, and I narrowly missed being pitched onto the top of the screw. I turned, and as I did so the screw must have come out, for the lid of the cylinder fell upon the gravel with a ringing concussion. I stuck my elbow into the person behind me, and turned my head towards the Thing again. For a moment that circular cavity seemed perfectly black. I had the sunset in my eyes." (The War of the Worlds)

Hi, in this context it would mean 'with a violent impact'. Please note that 'concussion' also means a temporary loss of consciousness when a person is hit over the head : )

Thank you for this question because I learned something new. Normally 'concussion' in modern English is a medical term, the state someone is in when they have received a blow to the head. I have read a lot of H.G.Wells and never noticed before that he uses this word in more than one novel to mean simply a hard blow or collision, not referring to a person, but for example describing an object hitting the ground hard. H.G.Wells was writing in Victorian times and this word was no doubt used a little differently then.
