Bonne journée meaning
Hi,
I know that bonne journée means "good day/have a good day," but I am a bit fascinated by the context it's used sometimes.
Specifically, sometimes my friends write "bonne journée" at the end of a text message, which I find bizarre. In English, it is a bit formal/strange to end a text like this to a friend.
Also, someone once texted to cancel plans and ended with "bonne journée," which seemed really cold!
Is the phrase not always a literal "have a good day?"

Its equivalent in English would be something like: Have a nice day!

I would even recommend you to only use this phrase with your friends, close colleagues and family in a mail. It is not a very formal way to end a message.

In French they not always use have a good day, but there is no problem with that and also beware, you should never translate word by word because Language is translated by the own understanding of a nation, culture etc. So bonne=good, journée= day, maybe it seems cold if you try to translate in English, but, that really means i wish you a good day instead to say ''je te souhaite une excellente journée '''.
