the past tense of "to dive"
Hello,
I was wondering what the past tense of the verb "to dive" is. Is it dived or dove? My American professor said that using "dove" is incorrect, but I have seen it used in many texts and videos.
Thanks in advance.

To dive is a regular verb, but in US they use dove as past of dive!

Yes, In the US we tend to favor “dove”. To say “dived” might sound a little odd, but not entirely wrong. For example, “He dived off the cliff.” People say that in the US. It’s probably just one of those regionalisms that varies from one place to another, even within the US. I’ve heard them both and they both seem correct to me. It would be interesting to find some book on regional variations of English speech patterns.

I'm from the US and where I am at we commonly say "dove".
For example:
The cat dove off the couch.
The swimmer dove from the platform.

I think because the past tense of the verb to "drive" is "drove" people have modified the past participle "dived" to "dove".
I think "dived" sounds more natural. I don't think "dove" is incorrect as it seems to be accepted as a new version but in the UK for example we mostly use "dived"
