You should read newspapers to catch the best example of modern language, then books by current authors, essays or biographies, everything that has been written in the last 20 years, perhaps at the beginning, avoids novels and historical English literature of the nineteenth or twentieth century. I also recomend listening to the radio, podcasts, bbc radio programs to listen people interact in real life conversations, exchancing opinions and debating.
