The French certainly didn't invent it. One story goes that it came from American soldiers who visited France during World War I (1914-1918). Many of them came from farms, rural areas and very conservative towns where such things just weren't discussed. After some being kissed that way in France, they returned home bringing tales of the "French kiss". That story is probably the most likely, because it doesn't seem to have appeared in writing in the U.S. before then.

Hello Alisha, Several other terms were coined "french" as well, although they were neither historically nor geographically linked with France such as 'french' fries and 'french toast' among others and the expression "excuse my 'french' " for using bad language. There are different interpretations (beside the one fdmaxey mentioned): - It could date back to the 20's France and the specific culture of that era. The french had then a decadence expressed as the culture of passion. To be french is to be passionate ...french kiss etc.... - Others say that Maraichinage * referring to the Maraichins ,residents of Pays de Mont* is a prolonged kiss, originating from Pays de Mont in Britanny. It is the likely the predecessor of what is now commonly referred to as french kissing. Accordingly the kiss originated in France.

I found this on the net for you. - The prejudice that anything French is wicked, sexual, and decadent has let Frenchmen in for more than their fair share of abuse in English. Many such expressions date back to 1730-1820, the height of Anglo-French enmity, but some are current and others go back even further." From the "Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins" by Robert Hendrickson (Fact on File, New York, 1997). : : : "French Kiss" is an obsolete term for what the hyperpatriotic Americans now call a "Freedom Kiss":> : : FRENCH KISS - "a passionate open-mouth kiss with tongues caressing. This term has probably been in use since World War I, but became extremely popular with teenagers during the late 1930s." From "I Hear America Talking" by Stuart Berg Flexner (Von Nostrand Reinhold Co., New York, 1976).
