In the case of Freddie Mac, Buffett noted that the financials were scrutinized by hundreds of analysts, a congressional oversight committee, capable directors, auditors . . . and yet earnings were misstated by $6 billion—much of which was related to derivatives. It could just as easily been off by $12 billion.
