When reading in another language do you translate to your native language? I want to practice Spanish by reading newspaper articles online. I noticed that I am translating everything to English as I read it. Is this normal? I don't want to spend the rest of my life reading Spanish by translating it into English.

I think It is normal at the beginning but I am sure the more you read/practice, the easier. You should circle the unknown words, look for the meaning and read the article again. ¡Saludos!

I think it's totally normal. I have had this experience but over time with plenty of study, I need to use the translator much less. One thing I do to help this (still!) is that I always have Quizlet.com open for my flashcards. I put the new words or phrases into Quizlet and then study them. Inch by inch you will need the translator less. Keep going!

Language learners progress through stages. At an early stage, they translate every word and then rephrase it mentally in their first language. At a later stage, they translate phrases. Eventually, they just "understand" without translation. (of course, it takes time and effort...lots of time and lots of effort)

I agree, at the beginning its normal to translate everything to the language with that you are familiar but as you get more used to it and your level increases it then starts to "fit" and you will no longer translate but comprehend the meaning, consistent reading and study is key though :)
