Professeur is professor in English. Porfessor must process and holding a phd degree with 10 years teaching experience, less than 10 years is associate professor, less than 5 years is lecturer. As of today, most people ignored its classification, anyone who teach at colleges or universities are professor(s). Enseignant is teacher at elementary or high schools

Hello Alvin, Thr classification in school system is to differentiate the job function and pay scale. If you are a middle or high school teacher, you are subjected to be paid in accordance to the teachers' pay scale. The scale established minimum and maximum wages. If you reached the maximum, you may get frozen at that range or pomotion. Teachers will never get promoted to professor because of the qualification status, additionally teaching at elementary or high school can not be substituted the teaching experience at colleges or universities. Equal opportunity is the law. If you believed in teachers are the same as the professors. Then you may challenge the court for discrimination the teachers for under paid where make in comparison with the professors. (Good luck for being a hero to teachers). If you are so relies on dictionary, then look up the "president" for me. The president for the company, and the United States Pesident, Does it mean to you that the company president is the same as the United States President? I agree with newfree, there is no different between professeur and enseignant, as long as you don't get involved in completing with education. Since, it is a question asking for the difference, there must be the answer for the difference.

It is common to say for example: Philippe est professeur d'histoire. Philippe is a history teacher. Your interpretation is correct. "Professeur" is rather a title, (titulaire d'une chaire probablement universitaire). while "enseignant" is emphasizing on the job description,namely "teaching". However it is not common to call a university lecturer"enseignant" ,although he is actually teaching. Synonyms for "enseignant" according to the dictionary "Dictionnaire Francais Definition Synonyme" in french are 'instituteur, maitre, precepteur '. precepteur is a tutor instituteur is a primary or elementary school teacher and maitre' again is a primary school teacher. Synonyms for "professeur" 'maitre, precepteur, enseignant, precepteur, prof, instituteur, magister, educateur, instructeur.' * magister means professor , lecturer as a title . * instituteur is again a primary or elementary school teacher. Although both words could be synonyms according to the dictionary, yet the distinction is in the act of applying both.
