How would you interpret the phrase “go figure it out”?
How would you interpret the phrase “go figure it out” in the fourth sentence?
I would think the author, or rather the translator, means “go figure” here. What do you think?
Thank you.
PS: the excerpt is taken from “Kneller’s Happy Campers” written by an Israeli author, Etgar Keret. And I’m reading an English translation.
the context:
I don’t dream about her at night at all, but I think about her a lot. Uzi says that’s just like me—to get stuck on girls I don’t have any chance of being with. Maybe he’s right, and I don’t stand much of a chance. But on the other hand, she told me once that someone who was half-dead was good enough for her, and when she got in that van she signaled to me that she’d be right back, so go figure it out. Just to be sure, every time I start a shift I do a little something—put my name tag on upside down, tie my apron the wrong way, anything, so if she ever does come in, she won’t be sad.

It's a colloquial expression and it's just the unabbreviated version of what you suggest ("Go figure"). The expression varies a little in meaning depending on context, but here he's saying, "I don't really understand it, but that's what she said so I guess it's right".
