which is more common & appropriate?
between:
"I AM / WAS promoted to XXXX"
and
"I GOT promoted to XXXX".
If I say "I got promoted", is it necessary to add the other detail (ex. to Manager / to a higher level / etc.)?
thank you.

Let's look at each question:
"I am promoted to..." = Incorrect
"I was promoted to..." = Correct
"I got promoted to..." = Correct
And yes, It's perfectly acceptable to just say, "I got promoted" or "I got a promotion".

As it is in the past, It is more appropriate to say to friends informally , 'Hey, I got promoted'. They may ask about your new status and you can say, 'Well I got promoted to Assistant Manager'. It doesn't matter really, you can say it all in one sentence as well, "Hey, I got promoted to Assistant Manager'.
If you are talking formally or writing it on your CV you should say/write
In 2009 I was promoted to Assistant Manager.
