What words are softer than this?
Are there words that are softer than "asshole, bastard" that people will know you tease them and won't get offended? Like to a very close friend of yours. Is "dick, prick" softer? Like " You're a dick. " Get off me!" Can you give me some examples?

Hi Kev!
Mostly all of the 'bad' words that are common in English have become quite normal to hear in friendly conversations. That being said, it really just depends on what the relationship you have with the other person is like. Some 'softer', as you put it, suggestions are:
- Idiot
- Moron
- Dumbass
I hope this helps!

If you're VERY close, harsh words are more acceptable (such as b*tch and b*stard, or some racist ones if permission is given). Unless it's said to you first, don't use the word c*nt. It's one of the worst ones.
Some insults change severity and usage frequency based on region (Scotland, Ireland, and Northern England are known to use insults more commonly, and in a friendlier way). My Irish friends are "Gobshites" (they're cheeky and rude. Gob = mouth, shite = fecal matter), and I tease my Welsh friends for being "Sheepshaggers" (it's an old, racist joke about Welsh people having sex with sheep- which they obviously don't). Australians and New Zealanders also tend to have a few swearword insults that are acceptable in friend circles - If you're unsure, listen to the ones your friends use most and what context they're in.
Softer swearwords and insults include: Douche or Douchebag (full of sh*t), Git (rude man), Minger (unhygienic person), Sod (cheeky man), Ass/Arse (human bottom), Bugger (like f*cker, but softer), Prick (penis), Twat (vagina), D*ckhead, Muppet (silly/foolish), Nerd (geeky, smart but not very socially skilled), Turd (fecal matter).
Some words can be VERY soft and used by children, but this means they may be taken more seriously when used by adults, as they are not outlandish. These include: Jerk, Creep, Cretin, Coward, Freak, Flake, Liar, Loser, Weirdo.
Insults to do with intelligence (because this is usually something said when laughing after someone does something silly): Doofus, Dunce, Dolt, Idiot, Retard, Moron. Do NOT use these on someone with a disability affecting this (like someone with Autism).
It is important not to use insults that are racial slurs, or about sexuality and gender. Some people may also be sensitive to insults about being overweight or other physical attributes. Again, when in doubt, check which ones your friends use commonly and follow suit. Hope that helps, and sorry for all the swearing !
