A friend of mine told me the phrase "lo pillo" in Spanish. It is used like "I see" or "Now I get it" when I understand something after someone explained it.
I know the meaning and the usage of the phrase, but what I don't get is people laugh every time they hear me say "lo pillo."

I wonder what kind of the feeling the phrase "lo pillo" gives you? Does it sounds funny (in good way or bad way?) or too colloquial?

Yes, it is a colloquial way to say “I understand it!”, but do not be afraid of. In Barcelona it is very common to use it among young people.

Usually it´s more usual when one doesn´t get it, "no lo pillo", or when asking, "¿lo pillas?". Saying it as such, without being questioned, it´s used when the thing one have got is quite a surprised, "¡ahhh, ya lo pillo!", and coming from a non native, might sound a bit funny.
