Exclamation & Jesus ? I hear that, on some occasions, people would use "Jesus Christ !!" to express their stunning, astounding and surprising feelings. In this regard, I was once told by a native speaker that this kind of usage might be somewhat offensive to some religious people. Is this true? For an English learner who is not yet to be adequately sensible to British/American or Christian culture, what's your advice as to whether, in public, an English learner can use "Jesus Christ" to express a surprising feeling since I don't think I'm able to deal with that kind of delicate social engagement regarding what time, what occasion to use is the best or appropriate?I would like to regard the following 2 points very useful to me. Also, with the feedback from them, I'll try not to use them to avert unnecessary troubles since I'm not a local, and it's always better to pay much more respect towards various groups of another culture which you're not so familiar with. From domsla: Of course there always could be others around, taking offence. You never know. You should be careful not to use them. I don't use any. Not necessary. Just keep yourself under control. From Romulus: but considered to be disrespectful to some Christians, especially the Catholic. Thank you guys !!

I think that expression serves as a profanity which is commonly used to convey anger, wry or surprise... To me, it is not actually offensive but considered to be disrespectful to some Christians, especially the Catholic. In the 2nd Commandment, it says: "thou shall not use my name in vain". This, I believe is the main reason of a Christian from not using that kind of expression. :)

Hi Hamilton, I think if you're worried about the 'minefield' of possibly offending someone, then avoid the phrases (eg. "Jesus Christ!") altogether. Your English speech won't suffer at all, promise. :) It is very possible to mash the words into different or nonsense words, so you can express surprise/anger/etc without being openly offensive. People will understand your emotion without being shocked by it. The wost case is that you may just sound strange or funny, but these are nonsense expressions anyway. See if you can recognise the original swearing from these common alternatives: Sugar! Fudge! Golly! Heck! Darn it! Jiminy! Crikey! (The list is endless...)

Hi... Now you know... so it will be better for you not to use it but you can express your surprise and say just "really ?" or something like that... a neutral word...

"Good grief!" is always safe. It doesn't make any sense, but most expletives don't.

You can hear a lot of... religious exclamations. People saying that would not care about giving offence at this time. They are not aware of what they are saying. Just expressing an emotion. Of course there always could be others around, taking offence. You never know. You should be careful not to use them. I don't use any. Not necessary. Just keep yourself under control. If you are that kind of person. If not... just curse right away!
