Hi there is a big difference. A government recognizes your wife as an official partner and she has certain rights by law. A girlfriend one day may not be the same one in future.

The difference between girl friend and wife: girl friend she is not living with you, wife is. However, if you are living with your girl friend for 3 years or longer, there is no difference between girl friend and wife. In US, The Government recognizes both paper and the fact. Girl friend have the same legal right as wife by law. The time of living together is the issue.
