Yes, Chinese people used to sit in( sitting, in Chinese 跪坐guì zuò)
Buddhism entering China around AD 200, brought with it the idea of (the Buddha) sitting upon a raised platform instead of on the mats. So people started using stools and benches.( That moment the style of stool and bench is same with Japanese seiza.) You still can see some seiza stool in Beijing, but we can it 马扎儿mǎ zhár. especially the older people like to use them, easy to be folded up and carried.
