Not necessarily an easy answer to the question. @SonGoku - seems the simpler answer depends on what you prefer @mewfree - Merci. By ethnicity, no doubt I am Chinese. But, in China it's customary to ask where someone is from when getting acquainted. And it's usually answered with a certain province or city in that province. It's a simple answer if you were born/raised in one place. In my case, I was born in one place, parents from another, and raised in yet another so I wanted to know if there were rules in answering or if it was personal preference.Hi everyone - thanks again for comments. Not sure people will see this post but I thought I'd clarify my situation and how I would answer. I was born in Taipei, so I assume that makes me 'registered' there. We don't that term in the US, but I guess it means where your birth certificate is issued. But I don't consider myself Taiwanese. I lived in Taipei a few years before emigrating to the US. My parents were both born in China Mainland, but grew up in Taiwan - I personally don't consider them Taiwanese. My Dad speaks more Shanghainese than Taiwanese. I was raised in the US, so I am American but I identify with Chinese culture/language. Since it's complicated in my case it would require a longer answer depending on who is asking and what they are asking about. In the end I consider myself "Californian" and sometimes "Hawaiian" (since I have lived there and enjoy the lifestyle). But, no matter what I will always be Chinese!
