Speak Slowly!
When you are learning a foreign language, the objective is to be able to communicate well or to be fluent in that language. Because everyone is different, there are nearly an infinite number of levels of fluency. Most students of a foreign language do not feel confident in their ability to communicate in that language and it doesn't seem to matter what their level is. Every teacher or tutor should strive to build a student's confidence. The best way I know to do this is to advise every student to speak slowly when speaking in a foreign language. Since many students first think of what they want to say in their native language and then translate in their mind to the foreign language, the process takes longer. Speaking slowly gives you that extra time you need to do the translating. Speaking more slowly also improves pronunciation so that the listener understands better. We humans tend to copy each other without even thinking about it. Usually, when your listener hears you speaking slowly, he or she will answer more slowly. This means that you will understand that person better. All of this process gives you more confidence which is absolutely necessary for communicating in a foreign language. When you are not confident, you are nervous and being nervous makes it hard to think clearly. The tendency when you are nervous is to speak quickly, so the more nervous you are, the more important it is to concentrate on speaking slowly. People will not criticize you for speaking too slowly, but they will criticize you if you speak too quickly. Speaking too quickly causes you to leave out sounds and sometimes entire words. So, the most important thing you can do to become more fluent in a foreign language is to SPEAK SLOWLY, regardless of your level!

One Step at a Time
Learning a foreign language may seem like an insurmountable task. You look at it as a project and it seems like you will never get to the end of it.
I am reminded of the rancher who had a thousand acre ranch and he wanted a fence built around the ranch. He hired a fence builder and presented the project to him. After just a few days the fence builder, seeing the immensity of the project, got discouraged and quit. The rancher hired another fence builder and had the same results. Several times the rancher hired fence builders, but each time the project was abandoned as the fence builders considered how big the job was. Finally, the rancher hired another fence builder and asked him to build a fence just 100 meters longer than the current fence. The fence builder completed the task and the rancher asked him to do the same thing again. Every time the fence builder completed 100 meters of fence, the rancher would hire him to build another 100 meters of fence. Eventually the fence was completed all the way around the one thousand acres.
As you learn your language, just take it one step at a time. Don't dwell on reaching the end of your project. Just complete the next ten lessons. If you keep going... one step at a time... you will eventually be able to look back and see a completed project.

No spaces before commas or apostrophes.
I have been teaching English to foreign students for nearly five years now. I have noticed a recurring problem with many of my student's writings. It seems to be habitual for them to type a space before commas. This is grammatically incorrect. In any sentence, like this one, that has commas, there should be no space before the comma. When writing contractions, the same rule applies. There are no spaces before the apostrophe. It's not correct to write a contraction like this: it 's. In fact, in most cases, there are no spaces before any punctuation mark. An exception to that rule would be "quotation marks".

Curious about Christianity? Free session!
Hi, I am Larry Kerns and I have been teaching English online since August of 2011. Since that beginning, more than 500 students from 46 countries have chosen to schedule lessons with me.
In my sessions, we discuss many topics, and often, the matter of my Christian faith comes up. I don't avoid talking about it, but neither do I push it on anyone. One thing I do offer is a free session to explain it to anyone who is interested. If you know nothing or very little about Christianity, it will take more than an hour to explain it to you. I simply explain it and offer you the opportunity to become a Christian, without any pressure.
I have had the privilege to explain my faith to many of my students and about ninety percent of those who joined me in this free session have decided to become Christians also. Those who did not decide to become Christians are still my students and we have a very good relationship. If nothing else, this is a great way to have some free practice in the English language!
For those who have more than a passing interest, I host a free Skype Bible study session twice a week. These are at 6 am and noon (in my time... Seattle, USA). We just read the Bible together and take time for questions and comments. Contact me if you are interested in joining us.

What determines a successful teacher?
People all over the world become teachers for different reasons.
Some do it for money. This is not a good reason to be a teacher, for several reasons. 1. Most teachers don't make large amounts of money. 2. Doing any job for the money does not bring satisfaction nor happiness. 3. Someone who teaches for money, usually has little compassion for his students and little desire to see them learn.
Some people want to be a teacher, simply for the prestige of being known as a teacher. In many cultures, the position of teacher holds a great deal of respect. However, respect will only be maintained by those who have earned it.
Yet others want to teach because they have a genuine desire to help people reach their goals. This kind of teacher will never lack for students, because every person will be seen as a student. This teacher is also a perpetual student. He keeps learning, so that he will have a continual supply of subject matter to teach. Every student is different and this teacher works at adapting to the students' different needs.
The successful teacher is measured, not by his salary, nor by his prestige, but rather by the success of his students. A successful teacher never arrives at a level of success, but is continually working at becoming more successful.

Give us back our TEACHER status!
This is a plea to all "Community Tutors" on this website. If you are like me, you strongly object to the change in the italki website in the summer of 2012, that took away our right to be called "Teachers" and changed our status to "Community Tutors". You may have noticed, as I have, that it has cost you some students. I am not opposed to those with earned teaching certificates being called "Professional Teachers". That is an accurate description. However, in truth, some of us "Community Tutors" can teach as well or better than some of the "Professional Teachers". A certificate does not make one a good teacher!
Now, the italki website has further degraded us by posting an ad that says, "Learn faster from a professional teacher". This is extremely unfair and often untrue! I would challenge that statement and I have many students who would agree with me.
Furthermore, I am dismayed that the website owners will no longer let me name the course(s) I offer. Again, this is unfair and degrading!
I am asking all "Community Tutors" to copy and post this notebook entry as your own notebook entry. Let's put some pressure on the italki website owners to give us back our status. Some students have less confidence in a "Community Tutor" than they have in a "Teacher".

Teaching English online is a fascinating occupation!
Teaching English to foreign students is one of the most fascinating things I have ever done in my life. I have the opportunity to earn my living by meeting people from all over the world. I get to learn about many different cultures while helping people to achieve their goals by learning the English language. I get to travel by computer to many different countries and I make new friends everywhere. I love my job!
