Difference between sooner and earlier? Sometimes, I am still confused as to when to use which word. I have heard a ton of times that earlier is more versatile than sooner because it can be used with both past and future tenses whereas sooner is restricted to future tenses. If that's the case, these assumptions must be correct then: The red bus arrived 2 minutes earlier (not sooner) than the blue one.
