An euphemism is a mild or indirect word / expression that takes the place of something that is considered too blunt when referring to something embarrassing. For example, the phrase 'a correctional facility' is an idiom that we use instead of the word 'prison'. Or we say that a person is 'big boned', instead of the word 'fat'. So the next time you hear somebody saying that they have to 'powder their nose', or you learn that someone has a 'negative cash flow', use this podcast to know exactly what they mean.

今天想和大家聊一聊【语言学习的方法】。
相信在收听这期播客的你，中文已经达到了中高级水平了，也一定有自己独特的学习方法和心得。在学习一门外语的时候，到了中高级水平很容易遇到瓶颈，我自己也有这样的体会。今天我们一起来听一位牛津大学硕士的分享，学了九门语言的他有什么语言学习方法呢？
大家好，这里是杨老师。那么这期视频呢，我想来和大家分享一下我自己的一些语言学习的经验。
那么第1点也是我觉得最重要的一点，就是一定要给自己的语言学习找到一个合适的动力。如果你本来学习语言就是因为对它感兴趣的话，那当然是最好。但是呢有很多情况是我们迫不得已要学习一门语言，比如说有时候呢我要出国了，所以我要学习雅思托福。这种情况下就需要有一个合适的奖励机制，比如说你可以让学习本身变成一件快乐的事情。你可以用更有趣的学习资料，当然也可以进行一些外在的激励，比如说今天我背了几个单词，那就奖励我自己一件衣服之类的。
那么第2点呢，我觉得大家可以根据不同语言的特点来进行一个学习方法的调整。比如说我之前学习泰语的时候呢，会觉得它的这个书写系统非常的复杂，所以呢，我就先着重于它的口语学习，因为它的口语呢，语法还是和中文比较像的。这样呢可以让你在学习语言遇到瓶颈的时候不那么容易放弃。因为你不管在学习哪个部分的时候呢，你的综合语言能力都是在提升的。
那么第3点呢，我觉得大家可以根据自己的需求来制定一个学习计划。像我自己呢会列一张表，这张表上我有听说读写4个部分。大家可以制定一年的计划也可以制定三个月的计划。制定计划了以后呢，也要写出比如说我每周要做的一些事情才可以达到我制定的这个标准。那么每周做的这个事情呢，最好还是可以量化的。
那么第4点呢，就是大家在练习口语或者写作的时候呢，一定不要怕犯错，特别是在学习口语的时候，很多同学会觉得哎呀我有口音、我说得不标准，或者说是我有可能说错那我就先不说了。但是呢，其实你犯的错越多，你进步才会越快。
接下来第5点呢，就是大家一定要重视口语的学习。当然你可以有个先后顺序，你说我先来学阅读和听力以后再来学口语，当然可以。但是不可以直接把口语这一块给放弃掉了，因为你在和外国人交流的时候，最先要用到的就是口语。可以比如说在网上找一个语伴，那也可以找一些外国的电影进行一些模仿，或者是你去给它配音。
那么最后一点呢，就是如果你要找一个老师和你一起学习的话呢，一定要找一个合适你的老师。如果有这样子的兴趣相同的老师呢，学习就会更加地轻松愉快。
我相信任何方法都是离不开实践和坚持，只要努力了一定会有收获。在未来的某一天你一定会特别感谢曾经努力的自己。我们下期见。

Instead of skipping your study session, try to do something manageable, even if it’s just for 5 or 10 minutes. This small effort prevents the disruption of your learning habit and keeps you from falling into the “rest zone” for too long. Remember, a little bit of progress each day compounds over time, and that’s how big results are achieved.

Once you take a break from studying for too long, it becomes increasingly tempting to stay in that “rest mode.” We’ve all experienced this—one day off turns into two, and suddenly a week has gone by. The longer you rest, the harder it becomes to start again. This is not just a language learning issue; it’s a cognitive phenomenon called the inertia effect, where the longer we avoid an activity, the more mental resistance we build up toward starting it again.
