In this episode of our Chinese character culture podcast, we explore the core character of "mù" (eye) and its fascinating evolution. We start with the character "zhí", which was originally eye plus the character for ten! The eye looking straight ahead gave us the meaning of straight, which explains the characters for being on duty and planting trees! Then we uncover the biggest surprise: the character for morality! It was originally straight plus heart! A straight heart means being moral! Then we dive into the character "xiāng", which was originally eye plus wood! Looking at wood carefully, which explains blind dates and believing! Then thinking, which is looking plus heart! And then the eyebrow characters: the door's eyebrow, the door header, and the girl raising her eyebrow, which means charming! Perfect for Chinese learners who want to understand the logic behind all those common eye-related characters!

今天想和大家聊一聊【中秋节】的话题。上个星期六是中国的传统节日中秋节，放三天假。中秋节是我最喜欢的节日之一，因为它是和家人团圆的节日。那么中秋节是怎么来的呢？
农历八月十五在秋季的正中，中秋节因此得名。又因这晚月亮很圆，人们由天上的圆月联想到人生的团圆，因此阖家团圆也成为中秋节的核心意义。中秋节的来历说法很多，通常被认为和嫦娥奔月的故事有关。传说王母娘娘为奖赏后羿射日的功绩，赐予他一粒不老神丹。后羿不舍与妻子分离，因而没有吃。这件事被歹人所知，歹人趁后羿不在家中，逼迫嫦娥交出丹药，嫦娥当机立断，一口吞下不老神丹，随后不由自主地飘离地面，飞上月宫成了仙。后羿从此在八月十五的月下设案，怀念嫦娥。由于“男不拜月，女不祭灶”的习俗，这一天拜月的仪式通常只有女性和孩子参与。中秋节有着很多习俗，形式也各不相同，但都寄托着人们对生活无限的热爱和对美好生活的向往。总的来说是传承历史，传递亲情，希望亲人生活都团团圆圆。
中秋节有什么习俗呢？中秋节的十大习俗，你知道哪些？一、中秋赏月。赏月活动源于魏晋，到了宋代更是不明之夜，也是通宵达旦，玩月游人。二、吃月饼。唐僖宗在中秋节吃月饼觉得味道甚好，是关于月饼最早的记录。现如今月饼的品种层出不穷。三、祭月。在古代有秋暮夕月的习俗。四、燃灯。中秋将燃起的夜灯悬挂于屋檐下。五、观潮。在古代，浙江一带观潮也是中秋盛事。六、玩兔儿爷。现在很少见到，基本作为民俗文物在民俗博物馆展出。七、走月。中秋月夜，人们衣着华美，三五结伴，进行赏月活动。八、玩花灯。早在宋代将“一点红”灯放入江中，漂流玩耍。九、吃鸭、螺和芋头。十、饮桂花酒。中秋时节桂花芬芳，饮桂花酿，现在大多红酒代替。

University Students Interested in Stress-Reducing Cats
While a number of universities offer students opportunities to play with dogs as a way to reduce stress, little is known about whether cats could help in the same way.

So researchers from the US and Belgium surveyed more than 1,400 students and staff from 19 Belgian universities to see how interested they would be in on-campus cat visiting programs.

Participants were asked seven questions about a possible cat program, including whether they would like to have a cat on campus, if they would find it relaxing, whether they would visit the cat, and whether they would recommend a cat program to other universities. They gave each idea a score out of five.

The average total score was 3.8 in favor of a campus cat.

The researchers found that the people with the most positive feelings about a cat program were women, cat owners, people who were more emotional, and — perhaps surprisingly — people who were interested in dog programs.

The study authors said that previous research has shown that emotional people are more likely to have strong relationships with animals.

However, dog owners, as well as people who were afraid of or allergic to cats, were found to be less interested in a cat program. Some also worried that having a cat on campus would be risky.

According to the researchers, the aim of the study was to find more ways to help people feel less stressed.

They believe cats can help, since including both cats and dogs in these stress-reducing programs could encourage more people to take part, and cats would need less training than dogs to help.
