Day 1 — How to Call Your Elders in Cantonese
In most Cantonese families you do not just say “grandma”. The word changes depending on whose side of the family it is, and getting it right is one of the first things that makes you sound like family.
爸爸 baa4 baa1 — dad | 媽媽 maa4 maa1 — mum
爺爺 je4 je4 — grandpa (father’s side) | 嫲嫲 maa4 maa4 — grandma (father’s side)
阿公 aa3 gung1 — grandpa (mother’s side) | 阿婆 aa3 po4 — grandma (mother’s side)
One more thing: 阿婆 is also what you call any elderly woman you meet on the street. It is warm, not rude.
Question: in your family, which side speaks Cantonese — the 阿公阿婆 side or the 嫲嫲爺爺 side? Tell me below.

🇧🇷 Feliz Dia das Crianças! | Happy Children’s Day! 🎈
Hoje, 12 de outubro, celebramos o Dia das Crianças no Brasil! 🎉
E uma das coisas mais divertidas de crescer no Brasil é ouvir aquelas frases clássicas que quase todo pai e toda mãe parecem conhecer! 😂
🇧🇷 Frases clássicas dos pais brasileiros:
1. 🛍️ “Na volta a gente compra.”
🇺🇸 “We’ll get it on the way back.”
2. 😄 “Você não é todo mundo!”
🇺🇸 “You’re not everyone else!”
3. 🏠 “Quando chegar em casa, a gente conversa.”
🇺🇸 “We’ll talk when we get home.”
4. 🧥 “Leva um casaquinho!”
🇺🇸 “Take a jacket!”
5. 🍽️ “Come tudo, tem tanta gente passando fome!”
🇺🇸 “Finish your food; there are people who don’t have enough to eat!”
😂 These phrases are part of many Brazilians’ childhood memories!
Now it’s your turn!
🇧🇷 Qual dessas frases você mais ouvia quando era criança? Você conhece alguma outra?
🇺🇸 Which of these phrases did you hear most as a child? Do you know any others?
✨ Learning a language is also about discovering the culture behind the words!
