Elfin, it was great to talk to you today, and I'm so happy that you found the session to be helpful! I think if you implement the suggestions I made today then your profile will be amazing!

Michael, I agree. Skype is increasingly hard to rely on.

It's true that a lot depends on the quality of the internet connection but  I don't have these problems at all with Zoom.

Hi Wei! I love this story!

Yes, poor Beethoven but at least it's creating a pleasant association to bringing the garbage out!

In Italy the garbage trucks come at 5 am so there's no music, understandably enough! ;)

    Sounds great!

I'd recommend Elllo for conversational English at all levels. It comes with a transcript. http://www.elllo.org/

Then, Breaking News English. There's downloadable material at all levels with the option of slowing down tracks if necessary.

Moira, I know you've been planning to do this for some time. It's so cool that the time has actually come!

I loved the movie, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel! Maggie Smith and Judi Dench were great in it.

Anyway, I don't guess you would consider blogging about your travels? It sounds so exciting and you seem to have it so well planned out.

    Wish you the best!

Sorry, I couldn't write more above so I'm continuing here. :)

There are activities that distract students from their anxiety that's why I really recommend finding someone with experience in the field.

I don't agree with correcting every mistake, especially if you have social anxiety. In fact, I correct every single mistake when I intend to put my student under pressure and work on that.

For practical reasons, it's rather useless to have every word corrected because the brain stops paying attention, keeps on making mistakes and gets tense. What's the point?

What I do is take notes while the student speaks of a few, more remarkable mistakes and write out the whole thing in context. The, we take some time to go over them together. Quality over quantity ends up being more effective long-term.

If what you're looking for is accuracy then you should work on the recording of the session. Pick ten minutes and see what mistakes you can pinpoint. When you self-correct, it's much more effective and memorable.

Susan, it's great that you brought this topic up because it will help many, many people.

Hi Susan, I get many students with social anxiety.

First of all, you should find teachers you are absolutely comfortable with. Pay a lot of attention to the introduction videos and see what your gut reaction is. Maybe you feel more at ease with men or maybe with women? Or the sound of the voice? It's amazing how every little thing contributes to making us feel at ease.

You can prep yourself by choosing to have lessons in a part of the house you feel more comfortable in, with reassuring objects near you.

Listening to something just before lessons, like half an hour before, is very beneficial no matter what your level is. It simply preps your brain, gets you in the mood AND calms you down because your brain is prepared.

As a teacher, to calm my students, I make them talk about neutral topics. That is things that they're not overly passionate about. The weather, what they eat at meals, their commute, things like that.

The quality of the discourse goes down when talking about things you have strong feelings for.  Of course, you have to be able to do that too, but at the right moment.

I've noticed that joking can make things worse so I wouldn't recommend it unless it's genuine and heartfelt.

    Ciao!

Quando ti chiedono del tuo paese, in Italiano, vogliono sapere della nazione da cui vieni. Per esempio, se vieni dall' Iran, devi parlare dell' Iran. Spero che sia chiaro!

I enjoyed reading the mixed part. It could be a fun way to practice reading the Cyrillic alphabet when one is tired and doesn't feel like being more focused!

Jerry, I agree. Our videos aren't about the teacher but how the student can be helped.

But it's really hard to say something sensible once the camera is on. So, you just start rattling out qualifications because that's what you'd do in the offline world.

However, that said, there's a lot you can tell if you pay attention and go beyond the words. The accent, the tone of voice, the demeanor, all these help understand what that teacher has to offer.

As Phil said, a lot depends on the goals and needs of each student.

I usually would recommend twice a week. But once is great if the students know for sure they will be putting in the work on their own. You know, things like completing assignments and independent study.
