Teaching Malayalam to Somebody Else — Including the Child Who Answers in English | Learn Malayalam #235
Açıklama
For the Malayali parent abroad whose child answers in English. For the person now asked by a friend to help them start. For the teacher. And for the learner who wants to understand what a good course would have done — because the fastest way to consolidate anything is to teach it.
THE HERITAGE SPEAKER — THE HARDEST AUDIENCE
A child raised abroad who understands Malayalam completely and answers in English. This is not laziness and not rejection. It is an entirely rational response to an environment where understanding is required and production is not.
What fails: insisting the child speak Malayalam creates resistance and makes the language a site of conflict. Weekend classes help, but two hours a week against forty hours of English is not a fair contest. Guilt does not work and damages the relationship.
What works:
One — create genuine need. A grandparent who speaks no English is the single most effective heritage-language teacher that exists, because the child must produce Malayalam to get something they want.
Two — attach the language to something the child WANTS, not to duty. Food, songs, films, cousins, a festival, a game. A language that is only the language of being told off will be dropped.
Three — accept mixed output. If the child answers in English, continue in Malayalam without comment. Do not correct, do not demand, do not withhold. The receptive channel stays open and production often arrives later.
Four, and it matters most — make it emotionally warm. The heritage languages that survive are the ones associated with affection; the ones that die are associated with obligation.
TEACHING AN ADULT BEGINNER — A DIFFERENT JOB ENTIRELY
1. Script from week one, two letters a day. Not romanisation. A learner who reads Manglish reads it as their own language and mislearns every word.
2. Teach the FRAME before the vocabulary. A learner with ഉണ്ട്, ഇല്ല, ആണ്, അല്ല, the question words and twenty verbs can build sentences. A learner with three hundred nouns and no frame cannot.
3. Teach the repair kit in the first hour — എനിക്ക് മനസ്സിലായില്ല, പതുക്കെ പറയാമോ? A learner who can manage a breakdown can survive a conversation and therefore have conversations. The highest-leverage thing you can teach on day one, and almost no course does it.
4. Compare relentlessly to what they already know. Malayalam word order matches Japanese, Turkish and Latin and is the world's most common. A Hindi speaker already owns the dative-experiencer. A Tamil speaker already owns ഴ. Every comparison converts something alien into an instance of something familiar.
5. Do not teach the written register to a beginner. Teach speech, mark it as speech, and introduce the formal register later and explicitly.
6. Make them PRODUCE from day one, not recognise — recognition feels like progress and production feels like failure, which is exactly why production is underused.
7. Teach the pragmatics alongside the grammar. A learner who conjugates perfectly and says നീ to their landlord has been badly taught.
THE MECHANICS OF A LESSON
At most a quarter of the time on explanation, at least three quarters on their production. The commonest failure in language teaching is a teacher who talks. Use the physical world — objects in the room, actions performed, food being made. Action supplies meaning, and vocabulary attached to a physical act stays.
