Profesyonel ĆÄretmen5 key realities about learning a second language. š
These realities apply to adult learners and, when understood, will save a lot of time and frustration.
1. It will take a lot longer than you think. ā
Depending on the language, the average person needs 600 to 3000 hours of practice over several years to reach fluency in speaking and listening.
2. You will always make mistakes. š«
The good news is that native speakers usually donāt mind and are supportive of your efforts.
3. Youāll never feel as fluent as you do in your native language. šļø
One major reason is that language is deeply connected to culture.
4. The memorization of lots of grammar rules is a waste of time. š
Native speakers donāt know most of their own grammar. (See Dr. Stephen Krashenās research on language acquisition.)
5. There is a ālanguage gift.ā š”
Like any skill, language learning comes easier to some. While one person may need 1,000 hours to reach a B1 level, another may only need 200.
Learning a second language requires patience and perseverance. But remember, the journey is just as important as the destination.
Embrace it and enjoy the ride! š
