Learning New Words — tip 2 of 5 #NewWordsWeek
Your online dictionary talks! They usually have two audio buttons — UK and US. Tonight's routine, ten seconds per word: press play, listen, pause, say it out loud.
Bonus: listen to both accents at least once. Some words genuinely differ — "schedule" starts with sh in British English and sk in American. Both are correct.
"Schedule" — which is true?
only SHED-yool is correct
only SKED-jool is correct
both are correct, UK and US

What is the best way to improve speaking skills in a new language?
Hi everyone,
I’m currently working on improving my language skills and would love to hear your experiences.
What methods have helped you improve your speaking, pronunciation, and confidence the most? Do you find regular conversations, lessons with tutors, or practicing with native speakers more helpful?
I would appreciate any tips or advice from people who have successfully improved their fluency.
Thanks!

Learning New Words — tip 1 of 5 #NewWordsWeek
Learn the sound the moment you learn the word.
In the dictionary, find the little mark ˈ before a syllable — that's the stress. /dɪˈveləpmənt/ means deVELopment, not developMENT.
You don't need the whole IPA alphabet; the stress mark alone will save you.
In the dictionary you see /fəˈtɒɡrəfi/. The mark ˈ tells you:
the word is formal
the next syllable is stressed
there's a silent letter
