In these lessons students will participate in a range of formal debates on the topic of Technology. Each lesson will focus on a particular language skill. I will provide you with tasks to complete before the lesson and feedback after the debate. In this lesson we will debate the Statement: “Self-driving / automated cars provide huge benefits for humanity and are the future of transportation. It is clear that the benefits of developing this technology outweigh the disadvantages” We will focus on ‘Signposting’. Signposting is when you specifically point out where you are in your speech and what will come next. This is used during debates, presentations and any form of public speaking because it helps the audience follow your speech better and can often make your arguments more powerful. When you book the lesson you will receive a PDF document including: - Background information on the topic (videos, Articles etc.) that will be useful for the debate - An outline of the lesson structure so you can prepare - Details about the debate format - Pre-class tasks to complete that will help you in the lesson After the lesson you will receive feedback from the teacher. These lessons are designed for you to take an active role in your language development. You should try to do some research and read the documents provided before the lesson, and then use our time in class to put what you have read and learnt into practice. Each task will require you to not only speak about specific, intellectual topics, but also adapt your language to be persuasive and convincing. SIGNPOSTING This lesson will focus specifically on ‘signposting’. This is when you signal where exactly you are in your speech and what will come next. Some examples of this are: - “Before I move on to my own arguments I would like to respond to what the previous speaker just said” - “Now, I would like to present my first argument” - “This brings me to my second argument” These phrases help structure your argument and will guarantee that you are as clear and concise as possible. This is a very important skill that many people forget about when making a presentation or engaging in a debate.
