Jack, a pocket-sized blue book with yellow text and white pages, climbed up the library steps, knocked on the modern glass doors and was let in by the security guard. It was an hour before the library opened to the public. 

“Mornin’ Jack,” said the security guard. “I’ve been dying to see you this morning. Could you whip me up a Frappuccino?” 

Jack’s life swirled around coffee. Not only was it his profession, it was his passion and life’s purpose. The library café had been in his family for six generations. Ever since Jack was capable of walking on his two feet, he was working at the café. In due time, Jack had mastered all aspects of coffee making, from grinding and roasting beans to excellent customer service, and everything in between. His father supervised him closely, making sure their state-of-the-art coffee machine was used properly. When Jack was ready, his mother showed him how to create artistic designs using the frothed milk. 

“You’ll have to wait a bit longer,” replied Jack. “I’ve got some extra housekeeping to do this morning. I’ll get it to you at opening time.” 

The island café was placed in the center of the public sitting area. It was surrounded by seven medium-sized tables. Today Jack had to prepare a new shipment of Columbian beans by grinding them and storing them away. After doing that, he mopped around the seating area and wiped the tables. Finally, Jack sliced some cheese for his most popular item, the cheese bread rolls. 

Jack switched on his beloved coffee machine and listened to it hum as it warmed up. With his hand on the steam wand, Jack caught his reflection in the pressure and temperature dials of the machine. Looking back at him was a newly-discovered shiny white hair.

Over 20 years ago, I was still a teenager. I turned on the color TV my family bought and noticed the 555 Hong Kong-Beijing Rally. I was shocked to find out that you can drive a car like that. So I made up my mind to become a rally driver as well when I grow up. In 1999, The World Rally Championship was held in China. I took the train to Beijing to watch the championship without telling my family. When the rally cars whizzed past me, it became certain that this would be my passion, and I’d keep striving for it. Eventually, I did become a rally driver. I put on the helmet and fasten the seatbelt. Listening to the co-driver’s pace notes, I am like a newborn. Now I could finally compete with the best Chinese drivers that I have only seen on TV before. My co-driver and I were getting better and stronger as well.
Bayanbulak is 4,000 km above sea level and encompasses dangerous cliffs, forests, and snowy mountains. The highest honor of Chinese racing is to win the Bayanbulak championship. I won five times in a row. That year I was 32.

남한에서 다시 일상을 되찾아가지만, 세리는 리정혁과의 이별로 인해 깊은 슬픔에 빠진다. 한편, 리정혁은 세리를 향한 그리움을 간직한 채 북한에서 조용히 살아간다. 그러던 어느 날, 예상치 못한 기회가 찾아오고, 두 사람은 과거의 약속이 이루어지는 곳, 스위스에서 다시 만나게 된다.

서로를 향한 사랑이 변하지 않았음을 확인한 두 사람은 그곳에서 조용하고도 행복한 시간을 보내며, 마침내 현실을 넘어선 사랑을 완성하게 된다.
