こんにちは！Atsushiです。
今日は7月4日。天気は晴れでしたが、今は雨が降っています。気温は27℃。

私もみなさんも言語を勉強していますね。
みなさんは日本語や、他の言語。
私は教えるための日本語と話せるようになるための英語を勉強しています。また、タイに1度住んでみたいので、タイ語も勉強したいと思っています。

そもそも、なぜ世界にこんなに違う言語があるのか気になり、調べてみました。

世界にはたくさんの言語がありますね。
どれぐらいの種類があるか知っていますか？
私が調べたところ、今、7,139種類の言語が使われています。

世界で1番使われている言語は、英語ですね。世界で約13億人の人が使っています。
2番目は中国語です。11億人が使っています。
3番目はヒンディー語です。これは6億人の人が使っています。そして、スペイン語、アラビア語と続きます。

では、日本語は何番目だと思いますか？
実は13番目です。1.3億人が使っているそうです。
世界で見ると、使っている人がとても少ない言語ですね。

でも、オンラインで私の日本語のレッスンを受けてくださるみなさんは、日本語や日本の文化に親しみを持たれています。それはとても嬉しいです。


話は変わりますが、バベルの塔という話を知っていますか？
バベルの塔のストーリーは、神の指示を聞かなくなった人間たちが力を合わせて1つの塔を作り、神を越えようとします。それを知った神は1つだった言語をいろんな種類に分け、人どうしがわかり合えなくしました。その結果、塔は完成せず、人々は各地に散り、それぞれの地域で暮らした。そのようなストーリーです。

実際は、言葉が違っていったのは、自分たちだけで共有したいことがあり、それが言葉の違いを作っていった、と言われています。では、言語が同じなら分かり合えるのか。そうではなく、同じ言語を使っていても、分かり合えないことも多いと思います。むしろ、同じ言語だからこそ、分かり合えないことにストレスを感じることも多いと思います。

なぜこれが理解できないの？とか、思ったことありませんか？私はあります。

でも、もともと言語が違えば、わからないことが前提(ぜんてい)になるので、状況(じょうきょう)が変わります。言語を学習しているみなさんはよくわかると思いますが、相手の話すことを理解しよう！とかどうやって伝えよう？と考えながらコミュニケーションをとると思います。おもしろいですよね。

つまり、言語は関係なく、相手を理解しようとすることが必要です。
コミュニケーション（communication）のルーツは、
・ラテン語のコミュニス(communis)ー共通(きょうつう)したもの
 ・コモン（common ）ー共有物(きょうゆうぶつ)
です。

感情(かんじょう)や思い、考えを反発(はんぱつ)させるのではなく、共有することで、コミュニケーションが成立(せいりつ)するんだなと思いました。

私は、日本語のレッスンをする時も、英語を学ぶ時も、このことを大切にして、話そうと思いました。
