意味：お互いに近くに座り、親しくじっくりと話し合うこと。

この言葉の由来は、和室などで「お互いの膝と膝が触れ合うほど近い距離に座って向き合う動作」から来ています。

遠く離れた場所やメールのやり取りではなく、面と向かって距離を縮めることで、壁をなくして誠意を持って話し合う姿勢を例えたものです。
