それとも壁を感じてしまいますか？
今回は、私たちの「気をつかう」体験について話します。

It’s often said that Japanese people are very considerate of others, but how do you feel when someone is being considerate toward you?
Does it make you happy, or do you feel a sense of distance instead?
This time, we’d like to share some experiences.

カンパネラ少年は、学校が終わると、まっすぐにサンセット通りの科学塾にむかいます。
『魔法ごっこ』をして あそんでいる ともだちを よこ目に、「魔法なんてウソっぱちだ」と、この調子。
勉強が大好きなカンパネラ少年が信じているのは、目に見えるものだけでした。
　「ごはんよ。おりてきなさい、カンパネラ」
　「ちょっとまって、母さん。となりの星にハシゴが とどきそうなんだ」
カンパネラ少年は、星空で おこなわれている赤いハシゴの工事に夢中です。
科学塾から帰ってきては、ばんごはんも そっちのけで、望遠鏡をのぞいてばかり。

ある日のこと。
その日は、遠くの『えんとつ町』から あがったけむりの量が多くて、星空をうまく のぞくことが できませんでした。しかたがないので、カンパネラ少年は望遠鏡の むきを変えることにしました。
そのときです。
とめていたネジがゆるみ、望遠鏡のさきが くるりと下を むきました。
空中帝国の足もと５０００メートルには、うっそうと ひろがる『森』があります。
　「そうえいば、『森』は どうなっているんだろう？」
カンパネラ少年は、そのまま望遠鏡を のぞきこみました。

なん千年も昔、人間は海から生まれ、あの『森』で暮らした時期があったといいます。これは、空中帝国に住む現代の人間には かんがえられないことでした。『森』は悪性の細菌だらけで、とても人が住める環境ではないからです。年に数回、防護スーツに身をつつんだ帝国の調査団が、『森』へおりているという うわさもありますが、だれひとりとして、そのすがたを見た人はいません。
「『森』には、いったいなにがあるんだろう。」
